Everyone knows pregnancy can come with an onslaught of unexpected and sometimes surprising side effects, odd cravings, and mood swings to name a few. However, dry mouth is a lesser-known symptom of pregnancy that’s actually quite common.
Dry mouth can occur for a number of reasons for pregnant women.
Pregnant women need more water to aid in the development of the baby. This can be a challenge to keep up with, especially if you’re newly pregnant, but drinking more water every day can prevent dehydration and alleviate symptoms of dry mouth.
Pregnancy can cause a slew of sleep conditions, such as insomnia, inability to fall asleep, snoring, and sleep apnea. These last two conditions can cause open-mouth breathing which in turn dries out the mouth and makes it harder to produce saliva.
Additionally, changing hormones can actually cause your throat and nasal to narrow which can cause breathing problems.
If you develop dry mouth while you’re pregnant it’s most likely due to shifting hormones and increased water needs.
If you suffer from dry mouth during pregnancy, remember that you’re not alone. Try some of these common remedies for dry mouth.
